MAUI TRIP

This past week my cycling team took it's yearly trip to climb Haleakala on the island of Maui. The summit sits on 10,000 feet in just 36 miles. It's an uphill yet beautiful scenic journey. We start at the Kahului Airport which is 20 miles from the base of the mountain. I went over the night prior and stayed over my aunts house. In the morning I met the group at the airport with a van full of water, Gatorade, oatmeal cookies, sandwiches and chips. This year I decided to SAG (support and gear) for the team. Scott's wife Debbie rode along with me in the van to offer assistance.
This year we only had 2 mechanical for 11 riders. First one was Jim Caine's buddy broke a seat binder bolt. Luckily we found an auto parts store in Pai'a which replaced it. Steve Steel had a flat tire which he changed quickly. Unfortunately he missed the right hand turn to the park and rode an extra 14 miles with 2,000 feet of climbing. I quickly back tracked and found him riding back. Since the group was nearly 20 miles ahead, he jumped in the van and I took him to the base of the park where he rejoined LJ and Grandpa Gil.

Overall it was a great trip, congrats to all 11 riders who reached the summit. I will be posting a 12 min. video on our journey on Easter morning. If you would like a copy of the video in DVD format, please contact me.
