Sometimes the chip fall in the right places
"Timing Chip that is"
This year I was lucky to get number 13 for my race number. Lucky or unlucky?
This morning was the 40K Time Trial at Malaekahana Beach Park. The morning started early as I picked up Dev at 0445. First thing he said was the winds will be gusting to 30-40 mph this morning. He wasn't going to use his Zipp 1080 front wheel due to stability reasons. I said what the heck, turned around and made a quick jaunt back to the house to pick up a less deeper front wheel (SRAM S60). It wasn't going to match but I decided it would be the smarter thing to ride. On our way down it the wind was blowing like crazy. Plus the dark clouds looked like it was holding some rain. We checked in and started to warm up and then the rains kicked in, and for a minute Casey and I looked at each other and said "you racing"?
This year I was given the number 13! Auuugh, I'm not superstitious but with all the bad race luck I been having this year made me wonder. Dev told me that we were 1 min between riders so I was good until 0713. While messing around my truck putting equipment away I hear the starters yelling number 13, Ben Sambrano! WTF? I haul ass to the start line and I had 30 seconds before my start time! Almost missed it! "Thanks Weefy" it was 30 second intervals!
I also went back to my old set up, positioning and aero helmet. It worked in the past so why not give it a shot. 3,2,1 go! I head out and I was very surprised that my heart rate was low at normal speed. I catch my 30 second man 2 miles down the road. Still feeling great even though it was into a head wind and I'm glad that I made the choice for a less deeper wheel. Another 2 miles I pass another rider, 1 min later I pass another! I was feeling great and decided to maintain the current heart rate and speed. about 2 miles from the turnaround I see the Casey Tucker and his expression on his face was like "Oh sh&t he's coming" and I guess he picked it up and he ended beating my time by 11 seconds! (he's 20 years my junior).
Darryl Perry was here racing! Good to see you braddah!
Noel Coagas had some bad luck, he flatted with couple of miles from the finish
On the way back I still felt great but seemed to hold back a bit than I usually ride at this point. I pass several more riders and next thing I see is the finish line! I crossed the line in 1:00:39 (garmin data), and placing 3rd in my category, almost breaking an hour on this course in tough conditions. I felt really great this year, didn't throw up, eyes didn't bleed and felt like I could have raced it again! Dev did exceptionally well and set a PR in 1:01:07. Cutting off substantial time from last years race. Overall things went well and I was hoping to break and hour, but it was bitter sweet. This was Dev's last 40K here in Hawaii before transferring in 70 days.
This is what makes racing fun! Enjoy!
