2008 Hawaii State Champion

2008 Hawaii State 40k Time Trial Results Here

I awoke this morning at 0300 to get ready for the 2008 Hawaii State Individual 40k Time Trial. I met up with Dev, Jeff, and Casey at the Hickam Shoppete to caravan to Kahuku. I had to slam down a
Red Bull to supplement my morning caffeine intake. We arrived at the battlegrounds 50 mins later to set up base camp. As I was warming up on the trainer, I noticed that the wind conditions were changing. This time trial is notorious for the windy conditions since it runs along the water. Only a few break 1 hour here. I started out conservative but never got in my rhythm and I hoped by the time I hit the turn around I would feel better. Once I made the turn to head back, I felt somewhat okay but still not where I was last year. I just had to salvage what I could and hope for the best. At mile 20 I was already 2 mins down from where I was last year. Dont quit I kept telling myself and I was fortunate to win a gold medal in the men's 40-44 age group! This also allows me to wear the Jersey for the individual time trial. Last month I won the 2008 Hawaii State Team Time Trial Championship and received a gold medal and another champion jersey.

It's been a great cycling season and I could not expect more since being surrounded by great team mates and friends. Leading up to this race I help prepare Jeff Soots, Dev Andrews, and Jeff Adkins who raced their first TT. By the comments made by them, they had a great race and now they can continue their preparation for next year. I am proud of them for the training they did with me and have a bright cycling future ahead. Also I want to send props out to the entire HACC Team who walked away with some medals. Congrats to Casey Tucker and Sheri Chirco who also won gold in their divisions!

Whats next? Now I must shift my focus to the road races. The time trials are pretty much complete for the year. The month of June starts the 2008 Aloha State Games. This year the cycling road race will be held at Kalaeloa (aka Barbers Point) on June 14th. The Aloha State Games is similar to a Olympic format which hosts a variety of sports. They also hold a pretty cool awards ceremony at the completion of the games. Who wants to train specifically for this event?

  4. It's not so bad getting beat by the coach. Those hard intervals on Ford Island definitely helped me both mentally and physically in preparation for this race. I'm pleased with my progress since riding with the you and the other HACC teammates. Congrats on a well deserved Jersey.

  5. Good job Ben. Since this was in a Masters race, I won't hassel you for sandbagging (but you are).

So, like you asked me, how big was the field (2 people)?
