WEEKEND ALOHA STATE GAMES PRACTICE - 40K TT EXCUSE #1 AND #2

With the Aloha State Games in 2 weeks, I will be training on the Kalaeloa (aka Barbers Point) road race course this weekend. Plan is to do multiple laps and get a feel of the course. If interested email me for details.

Saturday May 31st 2008

Location: Kalaeloa Road Race Course
Time: 0630 Start

Duration: 2.5 Hours

Description: Meet at the Home Depot parking lot in Kapolei near Outback Steakhouse. Plan is to do a nice warm up from the start to the Coast Guard Air Station and and White Plains Beach. Then head back to the race start for a warm up lap. Followed by 10 laps of race simulation. Starbucks Coffee or Jamba Juice after the ride. Who's in?

Last weeks 40K TT is still bothering me and I made a ROOKIE mistake. The saying "dont mess with your bike" before the race or "test ride" your bike before the race. During the race, my power felt low with a higher than normal HR. In fact, this years average HR was 189 and a max of 191! Crazy high for a 42 year old...

Excuse No. 1 - Someone sent me a picture of me in the aero position. I look like a praying mantis on a bicycle. Yesterday a bit confused why I went 2 mins slower I measured my seat. It measured slightly below 26 inches. It was 2 inches lower than normal.

Excuse No.2 - Hmmmm, now I felt like I was also to stretched out. So I look at my seat rails and VIOLA! I normally race with the seat pushed ALL THE WAY FWD.

Conclusion - Should I have gone faster? Lets summarize... Power output lower, frontal wind drag in the praying mantis position, $1400.00 rear wheel, 9 pounds of weight loss and better shape than last year. I should have been at least an hour flat. Maybe I should have saved the money and got a brain implant instead, DOH!

Here are comparison pictures from last year and this past race. I really need to get lower

  1. I really think it's that you switched to the blue shoe covers from the red. Red is hot, blue is cool. You went from hot to cool.

  2. Ben, you can always use the excuse you were training a couple of rookies and forgot to check out your equipment.

  4. How can you managed to have your seat drop 2" and also move fore/aft? Were those adjustments that you made? Maybe stick with the same position, and use elec. tape to mark heights... 2" is HUGE. If my seat is a few mm off where I should be, I can feel it as soon as I hop on the bike... Either way, you're still state champ =)
