SOMETIMES YOU JUST GOT TO ROLL WITH IT!
2009 Hokukane Triathlon Overall Winners!Doug Junnush, Ben Sambrano, Steve Creacy
This morning I saddled up and headed out to compete in the 1st Annual Coast Guard Honukane Triathlon. Dev volunteered to support crew and Jeff came out to shoot video and pictures. The race closed at full capacity of 120 racers. This year I joined up with Steve Creacy (swimmer) and Doug Junnush (runner). The race cannon went off and Steve was out of the water in top 10 swimmers! We tagged each other and it was time for me to go to work!
Just before stopping for a mechanical
As I exited the transition area I started picking off riders one at a time. By the time I got to the golf course I picked off the last rider and saw the lead motorcycle up front. I thought there was another rider but as I made the first turnaround, I was that lead rider! About 200 yards after the turnaround my chain fell into the small ring. Not knowing why, I tried to pull the left side shifter up but nothing. I looked down and shifter cable was loose! NO! The night before I changed the cable and overlooked tightening down the 5mm bolt.
Bob Gardali and myself investigating issue after the race
I rode hard in the small chain ring back to the beach. I was still out in front and wasn't stressed and remained calm. I ended up stopping at the start stop finish and forced chain on by hand. This worked for 2 mins then again it fell off. At this point the 2nd place biker caught me. I made a decision to leave it alone and salvage what I can. I lost a little time but was still able to hold on to 2nd place.
Once I got into the transition I lost about 40 seconds to the 1st place competitor. I tagged Doug and off he went! He ran mid 17's for 5k, which gave us an overall win for the event, posting the fastest time of the day overall. Sometimes you encounter bumps down the road in life and you have to take or make the best of what you got. Tomorrow is the Mokuleia Time Trial and as today, it's about being healthy to enjoy the things you love. I have no expectations for the race, just to be safe and have fun. Oh by the way, I'm using the big chain ring!
Thanks to Dev and Jeff for coming to support the race! Videos by Jeff Soots!

In 2nd place while stuck in 39 tooth chain ring! I think I was still doing 27mph! No one else around Mike F. and myself at this point!
Was still able to hit 28+mph on the way back. Damn car drafting me! Still no one in sight behind me, this is fun stuff!

Congratulations, sounds like you guys kicked some butt. Better not let that happen tomorrow, I'll be out there with the Griffen...LOL!
ReplyDeleteBen you were smoking the course again!
ReplyDeleteGreat job to you and your team!! Fantastice riding! Lemonade out of 'small ring lemons'! Just like the old days, riding and laughing. Lance A
ReplyDeleteYou must have had that Nelly Furtado - Fly like a bird song going through your head! haha
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Big rings are over-rated :) Keep up the good work. Can't say enough about how the harder you train the more flexibility you have in achieving the goal. Now, if I could only apply that to myself....
ReplyDeleteYou never seem to amaze me! Somehow you find inner strength and speed on race day! I don't know how you do it! Keep up the great job!
